This tower is the latest step in the transformation of Chicago's Steeterville neighborhood from industrial wasteland to thriving residential district. 465 North Park Drive is avoiding the mistakes made by its predecessors and joins its peers as another glittering addition to the area.

When the northern portions of Streeterville began their flirtations with residential living, the results were crowded, dark, and brutal. 465 North Park continues the recent trend toward light, airy, glassy facades that share light and air with other buildings, instead of hoarding it for itself.

The building is a basic, but attractive, blue glass box with an adjacent podium for parking. The southern facade is indented and a disengaged roof screen cantilevers up from the top floor, making it appear as if some angry yet gentile god has given this building a squeeze, popping off the roof.

While the tower portion mimics the sky in color and light, the podium is also clad in aluminum, which helps humanize its presence. After all, this is a neighborhood of people, not corporations. The recent building boom has led to the locals crying out about the lack of greenspace. While few developments willingly give up their land for public use, using sensible and sensitive materials in construction can go a long way toward changing the character of a neighborhood for the better.
